Joanna Julia Smolarz

Joanna Julia Smolarz (Lublin 1968) studied in Poland at the Jan Matejko Academy of fine arts in Krakow. After that she studied painting and graphic techniques at the University of Seville, Spain. She lives in Oostvoorne and is a lecturer at the people's University since 2011. In her series of paintings entitled "between shadow and soul" Joanna experimented with chiaroscuro, an ancient technique in which the light-dark contrasts be greatly magnified and the light source is almost always visible. However, the dramatic effect stays in background to let Joanna create a poetic and intimate atmosphere, with a slight air of sensuality. The female figure takes the central place within the composition. The seductive play of light and shadow, describes her body in a way that gives space for the imagination of the viewer.
